Glendale Sensory Shopping Guide

Posted: June 28, 2024 | Author: Jamieson Cosgriff

Busy shopping centres can sometimes be overwhelming, particularly for people with hidden disabilities. Glendale is proud to offer families a range of sensory-friendly activities and tips to make their centre experiences as convenient, calm, and organised as possible.

Plan Your Visit

Sensory Map

To help families navigate busy centres, in partnership with Aspect Australia, we have mapped out potential sensory stressors such as noise, light, smell, and touch as well as crowding or busy areas of the centre. The map also indicates calmer quieter places if needed, and assists in preparing a person by increasing the predictability of a new environment.

What is a Sensory Map?

Sensory maps are used to prepare a person and increase the predictability of a new environment and indicate calmer, quieter places if needed. This helps to reduce sensory overwhelm, anxiety and stress.

Developed in partnership with Aspect

Glendale was assessed by Aspect’s Autism Friendly team on a typical, busy day. Autistic people conducted a walk-through of common areas, giving live feedback about their experience and advising on potential positives, challenges and solutions. Individual retailers and car parks were not assessed.

Note: While the Sensory Map acts as a guide for a typical day at the centre, sensory experiences are subject to change day-to-day.

Best Parking

The best low sensory access to the centre can be located at E10 on our sensory map, or Q2 towards Kmart

Customer Care Desk

Customer Care is located in the airlock near Coles and is open during centre core trading hours for assistance and queries. If you want to speak with a customer service representative before making your way in centre, please call 02 4954 9666 for more information.

Amenities

Our Parents Rooms feature private feeding rooms, play areas, children’s toilets, bottle warmers, and clean change tables. They are located at the Centre Management bathrooms near Woolworths, and near Target.

Glendale Farmers and Artisans Market Mural

Posted: | Author: Jamieson Cosgriff

Glendale engaged mixed media artist, Michael Black to transform two shipping containers located within the new undercover shade sail and the Glendale Farmers and Artisans Market into a memorable and expressive mural.

Located near Clear Skincare Clinics and Skechers, the murals convey expressive colour and gesture, transforming a blank space into a new found object that can be identified and experienced. The dynamic composition of the marks hold roots in landscape colour in the unique environment.

About Michael Black

Michael Black is a Sydney-based artist, who creates original art. His murals, prints, and private commissions allow him to capture moments in time through a variety of mixed media techniques. Michael is inspired by discovered landscapes, people encountered personal experiences, and responds to subjects in a dynamic and expressive manner. With an aim to capture the raw essence and beauty of a moment, the warmth and movement of Michael’s work provides viewers with the opportunity to experience newfound meaning in response to moments in their own lives.

Having completed a BA in Fine Arts (Design) at UNSW & Design in Sydney, Australia, Michael has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions. He is passionate about public art and has completed a number of large-scale public works.

Michael creates in collaboration with architects, interior designers, stylists, property developers, retailers, and galleries, bringing his work into a variety of spaces. He places a strong emphasis on the viewer and experiments with everyday objects, spaces, people, and places, often altering the meaning and aesthetics of these forms.

Through his practice, Michael aims to bring others into a greater sense of fulfilment and purpose in their own lives.
